IS350 Windshield Replacement
Hi All
Thanks in advance. I was unlucky on Wed and rock hit my windshield on highway . It hit the edge of the glass and crack propagate all the way to middle.
I contacted my insurance and they told me to use aftermarket glass through safelife. I have insurance with Allstate and my deductible is 500. All state has glass service contract with Safelife and their quote is $384 and thus I have to pay myself as it is below my deductible.
I requested and insisted to use OEM lexus and they refused it. They told me that based on my model year, location and market, the most insurance company can pay is $305 using non-OEM. WIth my deductible, they are not going to spend a dime on my claim.
I am really pissed. They have no problem taking my money every 6 months, when it is their turn to pay, they chose a path that they don't have to pay.
Do you guys have any suggestion or advice to fight back and get replacement OEM windshield?
Thanks.

You do realize if they change windshields with OEM your insurance would increase as would everyone's else. Allstate is a FOR profit insurance, so they will do whatever possible to maximize profits. There are insurance companies that are nonprofit like AAA, which have less obligations around profit. But yes, I do not think any insurance company is willing to pay for a OEM windshield unless you want to pay an extra premium, which is what they would do.

sorry to hear about your mishap. But, the better question is why don't you have full glass coverage? Full glass coverage hardly change the amount of your premium. Either way, good luck.

Sorry to hear. I had similar situation on my IS250. At that time I had State Farm, and they give my similar run around But finally, after long back and forth sending letters (yes-paper letters - I waned to be all documented) not jus over the phone conversations without any record, they put OEM Lexus glass. If I am correctly remember, they ended up footing close to $800 bill, my deductible for comprehensive was and still is $100.
Main argument was - that original glass is thicker and PPG what they planned to use is missing one layer compared to original! I had somewhere all technical documentation regarding manufacturing differences of these two glasses. (if someone will be in real need I will try to dig them out again, I am on vacation reading this forum on the phone, will be back home October 4th). So, thinner glass-means - less safety for me and because glass is part of structure of the car- it will effect all cars safety! Besides structure- sound deadening effect-what Lexus advertising and proud of this.
Just argue with them and make them sign document regarding future structural affect of the car. They would not sign any document regarding this type statement!

Due to my high deductible, I feel like my case does not seems very strong as they don't have to pay anything for aftermarket replacement costing less than $400.
I am thinking about pay out of pocket myself and move on. Dealer quote me $1389 installed. That is including top moulding, side moulding and clips. If it is a losing battle, I rather not waste my time.
What do you guys think. Should i stay fight this with insurance? How about I go ahead replace OEM windshield and send paperwork for reimbursement?
I will be shopping around for new insurance. Any suggestion.
Thanks.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago when a rock hit my windshield on my then 2012 IS 250 on the highway from out of nowhere. My insurance carrier at the time was some unknown company, AIS. They also didn't want to go the OEM glass route and, in addition, wanted to underpay the hourly labor for my selected body shop. I also had a high deductible, $500.
The bottom line was I flat out refused to get anything but the original OEM Lexus glass. The car came with OEM glass, don't get anything but that. The OEM windshield was quoted at $1100+, definitely not cheap. After some haggling, I got what I had expected and the insurance company agreed to repair my car with the original glass. Don't pay out of pocket. You shouldn't have to do that. Talk to someone else at your insurance company until you can get through. When this is all done, change carriers.
