Low inventory / high demand or otherwise?
I got a hand-written letter from the manager of my Lexus dealer wanting to buy my 2008 IS 250 AWD. The letter claimed there is high demand for this car, but low availability everywhere. Is there any truth to this and is the discrepancy so high that it can be parlayed into a significant deal advantage? I'm kind of thinking they just want me to buy a new car from them.

That is unethical and misleading ad to highly demand your money!!! DISLIKE! My family received such letter on the Camry 03 also few years ago and it even put out a very competitive price which is a lot higher than Kelly Blue Book. When we went to dealership, they said nope, we can't offer you that price but please check our inventory for pre-owned and new cars to see and we will work a deal out. lol!!!!!!

as others have said it's a sales ploy, to get you into the dealership so that they can beat you up on the trade in value of your currently vehicle (we have to do this and that to get your vehicle ready for sale so we have to give you wholesale value for your car) and try to sell you on a new vehicle replete with new car smell, updated looks and technology and extremely high pressure salespeople all expertly trained to take as much of your money as you are willing to part with plus 10%. This tactic has been in practice for as least 15+ years that I'm aware of.

They send them out to everyone. They are out there to make money.. Maybe I should respond to one of these. I am very blunt to car salesmen so if they are trying to beat me up on the price I will just call them out on it. I have been getting those ever since my 4th year of ownership (4 years ago).

we all like to think that we are great negotiators and we all like to think that we got the best deal and we raked the dealer/salesperson over the coals and that we called them on their BS and did not let them take advantage of us. While you are in there getting the fantastic deal of a lifetime and doing your thing look around the dealership and take note of the Multi-million dollar building that you are standing in and all of its many systems that cost money to run and tell me that we all beat the dealer ............................
