Default IS 250 AWD Axle (CV Halfshafts) - rear

My rear axle halfshafts are spewing grease all over the place and I have a significant 'clunk' all the time. I have been trying to avoid replacing them. My car has nearly 220,000 miles. 2007 AWD (stock). I've slid the inner boots back and packed some grease inside the CV joint area a couple of times, then sealed everything up as best I can. There are NO rebuilt AWD parts in the country. The cost of new parts is nearly $750 EACH.

Q1: Has anyone found an alternative?
Q2: Would a thicker grease be helpful? I am using wheel grease now.
Q3: Does the clunking sound mean that these are shot for good and that no amount of grease will fix the problem?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice. Don't want to sink that much money into a car with so many miles!

Besides the new, OEM ones, just keep an eye out online on ebay, craigslist, parts yards throughout the country for those half shafts.

My rear axles are experiencing the same grease spewing. I don't have clunk, but starting to feel more vibration when stopped in drive. How did you add more grease insides the boots? It looks like the clamps that clamp the cv boots at each end need a special tool or something.

I saw a few used axles on ebay a few weeks ago. Every once in a while, they pop up. But yes, NO COMPANY has reman rear axles for our cars. :-(

Wow....220k is effing awesome. I had to replace my axles at 70k MIles....I have put 130k miles on her since I bought her new almost 5 years ago.

I have to ask....has anything else broke yet? LoL

I bought her hoping to get 200k miles out of her as she is a work car only.
