I have a question before I get rid of my 2006 IS250 with 100,000 miles on it. I was told by lexus that my Y Pipe is leaking and to replace all bolts and gaskets at a cost of $2,300.00
Is this a common issue? Does everyone fix this issue? Live with it?
Not to sure if it is common but for the price of $2300.00, I would rather just get an F-sport exhaust and install it yourself. That route would still be way cheaper than the repair cost they quoted you for. Even a brand new F-sport exhaust will run you $1300-$1500, a used one will probably be around $800. Just my 2 cents.
The F-sport exhaust won't help. It's a cat back, but the Y-pipe is ahead of the cats. An aftermarket midpipe would, but they're a bit loud for my taste.
To answer the original posters question; yes, it's a fairly common problem. No, it would not be a good idea to live with the problem, since exhaust gases could enter the passenger compartment. If you have an decent exhaust shop with a welder, they should be able to cut out and replace the corroded sections of pipe. Some people have had exhaust shops just weld up the holes, but I have a suspicion that repair won't last long. A Lexus dealer is going to replace the entire center section of the exhaust, including the two catalytic converters, which is why their fix is so expensive.
This is common in areas that see snow. I had a leak in my mid pipe too and went with the Invidia mid pipe because it's SS and gained 1 HP. It seems like the car has more torque, but it's probably in my head. It's louder only when on the throttle, but not really that loud IMO. I know others have felt different, it's up to the person.
The OEM pipe is expensive from Toyota, you can find them on eBay used.

Oh you were talking the y pipe that has the catalytic converters on it, sorry my mistake. In my opinion, I would just purchase a Joe Z full exhaust if you still can find it for sale for the 2gen IS. If not I would go to an exhaust shop and get a second opinion and see what they charge.
Here is a picture of it if you want the part #'s and research the prices for your self.
Why can't you just get new gaskets for ~$25? I had the same problem on my F-sport axle back with Invidia midpipe and I got new gasket and no more leaks

You had an aftermarket stainless steel midpipe that was leaking where it connects to the headers and/or F-sport exhaust. He has a nine year old (not stainless steel) midpipe that has rusted out to the point that it has holes in it. Completely different problem.
^^^^The Lexus IS standard exhaust system is indeed stainless steel. From Lexus specifications sheet:
Body Structure and Paint
• Anti-chip paint on lower body panels
• Exterior colors (9): Starfire Pearl, Obsidian, Deep Sea Mica, Fire Agate Pearl, Tungsten Pearl,Nebula Gray Pearl, Matador Red Mica, Cerulean Blue Metallic and for F Sport package models, Ultrasonic Blue Mica
• Flush surface body panel and glass
• Galvanized steel used in all areas of the body except the passenger compartment and the roof"
• Narrow and precise body panel gaps
• One-piece color-keyed Super Olefin Polymer front and rear bumpers
• Stainless steel exhaust system
• PVC sealer and undercoating
• Use of sound dampening asphalt sheets in roof and floor pan
^^^^it's not a very high grade of stainless, but yes I'm sure it's stainless steel. Do you really think Lexus would make such a claim if it were not true in today's environment
