JM2C so I'll add that IMO rod bearings although yes, they make the engine louder, it's upon deceleration that failed or lose rod bearings really knock. For example, if you do a pull in 3rd gear and decelerate in 3rd gear you will hear a severe knock when slowing. The same is true with static revs while in the parking lot. Quieter when reving, knocking when you let off.

I bought a used truck years ago that rattled bad when decelerating. I needed it to last 10k miles. I did something *****y and polished rod journals in place, droped the mains enough to slide new bearings in, checked it all with plastigauge and buttoned it up with a new high oil pump. It lived far beyond 10k. lol
