Couple noises/things going on
Hey all, just got back from a 2000 mile trip. Noticed some noises while changing my oil the other day on my IS350. Getting an almost bearing like sound (staticy sound almost?) from the alternator, and a hissing noise from behind the intake manifold near the PCV valve. I haven't been behind the intake manifold yet so I don't exactly know what vacuum hoses are behind it besides the PCV valve. On the note of the PCV valve, I changed it last November around 100k, but I can't recall if I heard that hissing sound before/after the change. I'm at 110k miles now.
Vid from alternator area:
Vid from behind the intake manifold (whatever I'm close to @ 6 seconds seems to be where the sound is coming from):
I'm also trying to hunt down where I'm leaking coolant as well. No crust around the water pump area, but it's been kicked all over the front of the engine so that's not exactly helpful. Doesn't seem like anything major though, the reservoir is at the full mark. Noticed it on the oil filter cover yesterday which prompted me to take a look. I did replace the reservoir a couple thousand miles ago, maybe I overfilled it a bit and it's leaking out of the overflow tube. Are there any common places to look on this engine besides the water pump? Otherwise, I'll clean it up and keep an eye on it for now.
Thanks fellas.

Have you found coolant in liquid form or just the crust? If just the crust, it could be from the lid of the overflow; most IS350s tend to do this normally for some reason.
About the alternator, I'd replace it before it leaves you on the side of the road somewhere. Unfortunately our alternators seem to give us 8-10yrs, and then they crap out. I got my lifetime warrantied alternator from Auto Zone for $165. If it ever goes out again on me, I'll get a free replacement.
About the hissing, if you cannot find the source, borrow or rent a fog machine and fill the engine bay with fog. You should be able to see the fog being sucked into the leaky hose.

As for the alternator, I'll probably end up getting it tested this week. AFAIK, it was tested when I had a new battery put in 3 months ago and they said it was fine. If it ends up failing the test, I'll probably take it to someone to get rebuilt. Never had good luck with Autozones or anybody elses alternators.
