Boston, Mass. Local member offered help some time ago, but didn't respond this time so I used dealership for all work. (Much cheaper then all gas station mechanics around)

is there a tutorial for this? if my CEL is already on and has been for some time for my torque converter do you recommend I do not waste my time with changing the fluid before i get a new tranny?

Threre have been a few posts asking about transmission fluid changing so I did a little research and found a very helpful video that explained everything.

I hope this helps others as well.

I just read Russia manual for various Lexus cars and they all state under normal conditions to INSPECT tranny fluid and under "heavy" use replace it every 50k miles

Just DIY'd my second of 5 scheduled trickle flushes to my auto trans in my '06 IS350. Everything went as expected; plus the medium brown ATF that flowed out did not have any burnt smell. So I expect my trans is in decent shape actually. Just simple preventative maintenance, as my trans still shifted fine like normal before this procedure.

First flush totaled 1.75 qts stone cold. The second totaled 2qts. Discovered that my shift lever seal directly below the fill bolt is slightly leaking. Will have to order that. Other than the parts dept lady at Lexus not ordering the correct new O-rings for the fill bolt, everything has gone smoothly. Still have yet to do the trans temp overfill process, as I was waiting until the 3rd and final flushes to do this.

Do you happen to have a part number for the o-ring? Thanks.

When I flush tranny fluid on my Ford towing special F250HD, I get a bulk jug of fresh fluid connected to intake tube and run the engine
shifting sitck back and forth until fresh fluid shows up on the output tube side which means fluid is replaced completely.

My understanding is that is not possible on the IS350 due to lack of any intake tube.

Proceeded to do my third trickle flush today; another 2 qts drained and replaced with fresh ATF. I then proceeded to do the ATF fluid temp procedure. I used my trusty paper clip "jumper" from my Honda days to use to jump the #4 and #13 on the OBDII port. Worked like a charm! The procedures I've read online and on CL here never did say what time frame to expect to wait from a stone cold trans to when the temp is ready to "inspect" via the "check" drain bolt. I have found it was 5-6 minutes on a level surface. I also waited an additional 5-6 minutes to see if the "D" indicator would start flashing, thus indicating the ATF temp has exceeded the recommended "inspection" time frame. It didn't. I drained the ATF through the "check" bolt within a minute or two of my turning off the car. To my surprise the trans drained 1qt of ATF through the "check" drain bolt during the recommended ATF fluid temp time frame, even though I only ever added nearly the same amount of fresh ATF into the trans after three drainings. 1.75qts old drained, 1.75qts new added (first "flush"). 2qts old drained, 2qts new added (second "flush"). 2qts old drained, 2qts new added (third "flush"). So I'm sort of confused on the 1qt that flowed out of the drain bolt here. I understand that there is ATF thermal expansion, but 1qt-worth? My previous Lexus maintenance history never said the trans on this car was serviced.

Maybe my error was turning off the car, and then draining via the "check" drain bolt? Just re-read the procedure mentioned on CL here and it says to drain via the "check" bolt while at idle. I assume that during idle/operation, it adds a bit of vacuum that allows for less fluid to drain out?

Before I purchased my new Lexus parts, I examined what I could of the filter element inside the trans fluid pick-up and it looked clean and free of any debris. I decided to forego the new filter element for that reason.

Side note, my stupid Lexus parts lady said I needed to use an expensive ($20+ per tube) Lexus "RTV" on the trans pan gasket. I purchased it based on her recommendation. I pulled the OE pan with OE gasket and there was no physical evidence of any RTV having been used on either side of the pan gasket.

Pan gasket is straight-forward and easier than expected since no RTV was used. Cleaned the outside of the pan and the many pan bolts, and completed the install with the new gasket. With it clean, it'll be easy to see any leaks tomorrow for my final trickle flush. Since I have 3 qts left, I'll be installing the remaining 3qts and then doing the trans temp procedure to remove any excess, which I expect to probably be .75 - 1qt.

As of now, the trans is shifting smooth and seems to be operating even quieter than previous. YAY!
