An interesting read but pretty painful for OP.
I suppose one option before spending big bucks would have been installing OLD bearing and see if codes clear. From here you know its the part vs your car/you work/something introduced via work performed.
As for physical detection of bad bearings, often times it can be heard when loading the left or ride side.
As in, turning left at highway speeds loads the rightside as the body leans and transfers weight to that side.
Now turn right to load the leftside.
If a growl, rumble, or howl is heard, it could be a bearing going bad.
Of course only do these tests where it is safe to do so away from other vehicles.
