There is a dedicated tool for holding the pulley in place to break those loose. I just stuck the fattest screwdriver I could through one of those holes and let it back up the pulley against the pump housing.

I'm going to be doing this soon...

Is there a risk of damaging anything by using the screw driver, threads etc?

From what I understand...Leave the tensioner pulley in place to loosen these four bolts on the water pump pulley. Then loosen, remove belt, remove idler pulley, then remove tensioner pulley, then water pump pulley.

Here's something I found:

There are no threads in the holes in the pulley to mess up. These bolts aren't very tight, it's just that the belt would just slip when trying to loosen them. The screwdriver through the hole just gives you the extra little bit to get them loose. In my case, and as the OP stated, the belt didn't have enough friction to keep the pulley from spinning even with the tension on it.
