Need help! Difference between HID type and Xenon headlight.
I recently bought a 2012 is250 F sport and was wondering what is the difference between HID type headlights and Xenon ? I was told my model only fits HId types which are hard to find.

Really? I thought the HID headlights (High Intensity Discharge) required a ballast and were much brighter and included the auto-leveling feature whereas the xenon headlight utilized typical xenon gas filled incandescent bulbs, were not as bright as HID (or LED retrofits), required no ballast (just 12VDC) and did not have an option for auto-leveling. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Xenon is a gas that can be used in the manufacture of both HID and incandescent light bulbs. However, in the Lexus world, the HID bulbs have Xenon gas, while the incandescent bulbs are filled with Halogen. On the window sticker that came with the car, the HID option is shown as "Bi-Xenon HID headlamps". So on this forum Xenon=HID. In the broader sense, that's not universally true.

There are bulbs that mimic that are marketed as xenon, but for Lexus cars typically HID and Xenon or Xenon HID are used interchangeably.
Xenon H.I.D. (High Intensity Discharge) lighting is a superior lighting technology. Instead of having a filament inside the bulb, it is replaced with xenon gas. When the xenon gas ignites, it produces a vivid and bright light that is 3X more powerful than that of a halogen bulb.
This technology also allows for the bulb to ignite at a higher color temperature: which gives it the white / blue coloration.
Xenon gas-filled bulbs and other halogen 'xenon' bulbs are simply a standard halogen bulb that is either coated with a blue film on the outside and/or filled with a gas to imitate the look of a true xenon HID bulb. These bulbs produces much less light than xenon HID bulbs and often less than that of a standard halogen bulb. Xenon gas-filled bulbs also suffer from a short 6-month life-span.
