Need some help installing painted ebay trunk lip spoiler
All,
I just purchased and received a pre-painted oem.thing ebay trunk spoiler. The spoiler matches the black obsidian paint perfectly and came with a roll of 3M Tape with the red plastic backing.
This one doesn't have the bolts already in it so I didn't have to cut those off. It's this style if anyone is interested.
Anyway, I do just fine with anything mechanical but when it comes to body work I just suck at it. Always have.
For those that have installed a tape only trunk spoiler, exactly where do I run the tape around under the spoiler?
Do I run it around the perimeter of the spoiler as close to the edge as possible or do I pull it back in about an 1/8" or 1/16" or so?
Once installed will there be a gap between the trunk and spoiler?
Any tips and tricks are greatly appreciated! Thanks!

You might want to get some 3M VHB tape. I did mine with that. Run it around the perimeter and place as much as you can in the middle part of the spoiler. VHB is very strong so be cautious when installing. I had a friend help me align it. We did a few practice runs to get a feel of how exactly the right position should lay on the trunk. Then we peeled all the backing from the tape and placed it on the trunk. Also mark the trunk with some painters tape. So the tape will be your guide as where to roughly place the ends of the spoiler at centering it for placement.

Good advice above. I purchased the same thing, aftermarket though and the tape being used was shabby (it says 3M on it, but doubt it), but tried installing it. FAIL.
So I unstuck it and replaced all the tapes with my 3M heavy-duty automotive double sided tape. Eyeballed it correctly (the masking tape is a good tool). It stuck. Every now and then I push it in, I do not see a movement, so I think it stuck well.

Bought it at the same place you did. Should work fine.

Clean the area in which you'll put the spoiler thoroughly. Don't use windex or anything that slides water off. personally I use a little dish soap and water.
put the 3M tape all around the spoiler and two long strips in the middle. Try to do this with long strips. So in this case, you should use a total of 6.
Mount the spoiler in warm temperatures like 75-85F degrees.
When perfectly mounted, push down the spoiler as hard as you can. Use body weight. And get all the edges and stuff.
Then you're done, personally after I like to use a heat gun and heat the tape a bit after it's stuck on and continue pressing but it's not necessary.

Clean with alcohol really well. Don't wash the car for a few days after. I put the tape on the spoiler and let it sit for a few days. Really press that sucker down. There aren't really any noticeable gaps between the spoiler and the trunk. I bought mine from Ikon motorsports but I'm sure its all the same.

Wow! Thanks for all of the responses. This helps a lot.
I'll give the trunk a good wash with normal soap and water, then wipe it down with denatured/isopropyl alcohol and use some good 3M VHB tape and my trusty heat gun.
It will annoy me to no end if I don't do this right the first time and the ends start peeling up.
Oh, and thanks for the pic. That's perfect!
