Hello! I'm new to Lexus and the forum. I'm looking for a nice, safe, reliable car for my daughter and was considering a 2007 or 2008 Lexus is250 with over 100k miles which I've found to be around $9k. I was expecting them to be able to run reliably for a long time and hopefully get another 100k out of it. I would probably put a catch can on it to help deal with the carbon issue. My main question is will there be an easy way for me to determine the level of carbon buildup a car has without tearing into it in a major way? Something I can check in 5 minutes with a screw driver or ratchet?
If a 07/08 in great shape and well maintained, has been carbon cleaned inside and I put a catch can on it, do you guys think it will be reliable till 200/250k without needing a new engine or trans? Is there some very expensive part that tends to go out like electronic related or something like that?
If you guys think a IS250 probably won't work out to be a high mileage contender I will probably settle for getting her a 100k mileage 2011 Camry that's similarly priced. But the seats are uncomfortable and I'd rather get a Lexus if it can be a high mileage contender.
Thanks!
Stephen

I would go with the Camry or an IS350 but to answer your question there are endoscopes like the one linked that can go down into the engine to check for things. The carbon typically builds up on the exhaust valve.

Like mentioned above, I recommend a Camry over an IS250. I recommend an IS350 over both.
If you're thinking of a Camry but want something more luxurious I'd have you consider the ES series. ES330, ES350. Very nice, comfortable, Camry/Avalon like. Super reliable. Good luck.

I'm giving my younger brother my 06 with 170k with no issues, as I just had it blasted.
