Default AWD Transmission whine

Few months back I noticed a slight whine while on the gas. When I let off it goes away. It shifts fine although when its freezing outside it takes it awhile to go into 6th. Other than that, it shifts fine in normal temps. Did a search and didn't see anything. Thoughts?

Year and mileage? Have you ever inspected the fluid?
1st and 2nd are numerically very low gears for a car with that 4.08 ratio in the rear so they may whine some.
When in 4th gear (1:1 ratio in = out), does it whine then?

These have sun and planet gears to get those ratios divided down (1st/2nd) so it may be normal. Mine does it also, but I can not say for certain it is normal. Are we talking windows down, AC off, tuner off? Or can you hear it over everything else?

Mine; 2013 IS-350, RWD, 53k mi.

You sure it's not the Diff?

Its a 2006 IS250 (auto). It sounds like its coming from the shifter area. Not sure if its the rear diff and the should is going through the driveshaft or not. I only hear it in high gears. Windows up, AC on and no radio is when I hear it, only from the inside of the car, not outside.

Start with a fluid change / drain as your first course of action.

Don't buy into the whole "lifetime" fluid - it doesn't exist.

You NEED to service your transmissions, this goes for all members on here.

You don't need Toyota WS fluid either, there is a lot of great oil out there that is WS compliant.

I just changed the trans fluid in my 07 IS250 and it was super black. You would have thought it was engine oil. Drain the oil and change the filter. I used Valvoline Max Life ATF as it's considered superior to Toyota WS.

There are other threads on fluid level checking so I'm not touching on that.

You can get almost 4qts out in a single flush by:
Drain and measure all that comes from pan drain plug being removed.
After the bulk of the fluid stops coming out, start the engine for about 5 seconds. This will throw about another quart and then some into the pan. You'll get even more if you drop the pan and filter.

Refill: add 2qts and start it. Pump will suck it up and fill the converter. Turn it off and add the estimated amount to bring it to full.

How many miles on the vehicle?
Is this backwards compatible with conventional fluid? I couldn't find where they said it is fully compatible and can be mixed with TWS.

I would only trust OEM fluid for the transmission.

Mine has 174k. From what I've read this fluid is far superior to that of the Toyota WS fluid. It is full synthetic as well. The Toyota WS fluid I've read will turn into acid over time and isn't really good. Toyota did say their transmissions aren't serviceable, so it's not like they have your best interests. A lot of people swear by the MaxLife ATF, and plenty of people have used them in Lexus's.

If you want the original WS fluid, that's still better than not changing it of course. Change the filter and gasket while your at it, cause it's super cheap. Just be aware that these cars can use two kinds of transmissions, which can have different gaskets. Both gaskets look square, but one has a small indentation on one side. Also the aftermarket filters are a little smaller but that''s ok.

Apologies because I know the post is old, but did you fix the noise issue? Thanks
