No good guessing. Only way to find out (if you can be bothered ) is to pull the pan etc off.
I would replace engine and use the old one as a boat anchor. (you wont need to drain the oil as you already did )

I've had my car back for a few weeks and everything is fine now. The engine certainly did throw a rod, as can be seen from the photos. It was the back left drivers side rod that threw a *****. You can see that it hit the pan from within and even made a hole that I didn't see until the engine was removed. My guess is that the engine had been low on oil in the past and the driver didn't check. Some damage was done and when I got the motor I put fresh thin oil and this happened. Good news is the new engine has 117k miles on it. Time to deal with this awful stereo.
