Default Can a 2014 Lexus IS250...

Can a 2014 Lexus IS250 be started, if the vehicle is in the garage and the keys are inside the next room with the door closed?

Also, if one was to drive off without a key, would engine and performance issues occur?

Thank you,
Brian

Do you mean FOB or a physical key? If the FOB is close enough to your vehicle it will start. It just all depends how far it is from the car. None of my vehicles can be started if the FOB isn't in them or very close to them. If I took it into the house there would be no way. Now if someone can scan your FOB then they could use the device to steal your vehicle. This was occurring recently with people being able to read your FOB while it was in your house and then use that signal to open your vehicle and drive off.

it is a fob, with keyless start. Car was in the garage. Key was next in next room with a wall dividing it.

The vehicle was believed to be stolen. was driven 3/4 of a mile. inside of car caught fire. left abandoned.
reports of a subject standing around the vehicle, with no one inside it, but the vehicle was reving itself and making loud popping noise as it began to smoke inside the cabin.
vehicle eventually caught fire and subject ran away.

thank you for the response

Those devices actually are fairly cheap to make yourself, or obtain. I would bet this is what happened anyways.

Now I'd be interested in why it was only driven 3/4 of a mile and caught fire. Wonder what they did.

I'm guessing the fire was caused by a drop cigarette or something.

The linked article suggested to keep the key FOB in a metal box or the refrigerator if you're concerned someone being able to take the car.

I'm sure it's possible to duplicate key, but it's an issue that would need to resolved later if the car was taken without the key FOB; assuming the thieves don't part the car out. I've read most cars are worth more parted out.

I think to answer your original questions....

No. The car is not supposed to be able to start without the FOB very close to the steering wheel. The car is supposed to know if the FOB is inside our outside the car. I start my car in the mornings to warm up now that it's getting cold. I open the door. While standing outside the car, I place my foot on the brake and reach down and press the start. I've had a couple of occasions where it would not start and said "Key Not Detected" or something. I lean into the car a few inches and it starts.

No. If the car is driven away without the FOB, it does not do a thing except beep and say "Key Not Detected". It does not affect performance in any way and would not cause the craziness you refer to. I wonder if someone hot-wired the car and that caused the fire. Possibly they kept the starter motor running or something or caused excessive drain on the battery which caused it to fail catastrophically.

Just to add to point 2 above - if you drive off without the key, the car will drive fine until you stop and turn off the engine. Then, of course, you can't start it again because it is now out of range of the key.
