Default Need Advice on Blown ML Rear Subwoofer

Just recently I noticed a crackling noise coming from the rear shelf panel. I suspected it was a blown subwoofer speaker and a Lexus tech confirmed yes its gone out. Very expensive to replace so Im getting other advice. Ive researched the subject and Ive seen many solutions--repair the existing speaker, replace it with aftermarket, or just get a new ML speaker.

Anyone had this problem??

Yes, many in fact. It would seem that the base factory sound system's sub is less prone to failure than the upgraded ML sub.

The least expensive fix is to repair the subwoofer yourself by replacing the foam surround by gluing another one in its place (usually this is the first part that fails). Replacement foam pre-cut to the diameter of the ML Subwoofer costs less than $10. But I recommend removing the subwoofer first and confirming that there really is a hole/delamination in the foam.

So it's not the voicecoil that goes out, it's just the surround? Really? How is that? Does it rub against something? I've got the base factory audio system, so I'm immune to this issue apparently. LOL!
