Like a dope, drive home with the gas cap off. When I realized what I had done, was surprised that nothing showed on my dash. Is there no indicator for when this happens?

The OBD2 evaporative emissions test that would detect a loose gas cap doesn't run continuously, it runs once per drive cycle. If you hadn't noticed the loose or missing cap, you'd likely have seen it the next day you drove the car, likely soon after the car warmed up.
