Default Rear 255/40/18 or 265/35/18?

I'm replacing tires on my car and I'm thinking of getting 265/35/18s on the rear. The diameter is .7in less than the 255/40 so will bump revs a bit. Tire weight about the same.

Anyone running 265/35/18s?

better off with a 245 40 18 imo. 265 is a bit of a stretch on an oem rear wheel

The Niche rear wheels are 18x9.5

I ran 265/30 in the back when I had 19s and it was fine on my 19x9.5 +42 wheel, lowered on H&R springs, no fender modding necessary.
the .7 inch difference is very negligible as different tire manufactures vary in tire size even between same sizes.

in other words not all tire sizing runs true.
for example a 225/40/18 Michelin may have a slightly thicker sidewall than say a 225/40/18 Hankook - same 40-series tire but may still have some height differences based on design.

I am running 265/35/18 Michelin PSS on the stock rear wheels with no issues and no rubbing with stock shocks/springs and Fsport sway bars. I'm considering 275s for my next set of rear tires.

265/35/18 have a manufacturer's recommended wheel width of 9 to 10½". Putting it on an 8½" wheel is pushing it. IMHO, 275/35 on stock rear wheels would be an absolute No-No.

Really not true. Their may be differences in tread width, but cross section and height will remain a constant throughout different brands of tires. I just checked both Michelin and Hankook Hi-Po tires in the 225/40/18 size you give and an example, both are listed by the manufacture as being 25.1" in OD,

Some sidewalls may be more square.

I decided to keep the stock size 255/40/18 same tire Nitto Motivo. Great tires--quiet, good ride, sharp handling, good treadwear 560, and Amer Tire Co is hooking me up on price.
