If so, do you use a wrench to remove the oil filter element?
Today I attempted to remove the oil filter element with a rubber strap wrench, but it just kept slipping. If I plan on keeping this car longer, I should probably invest in the cap that fits over the end of the filter assembly.

you need a tool that fits on the housing and then you use a ratchet to remove it.

The metal caps are or were $9 at ORiellys ( you could try walmart or Crappy tire). I bought a plastic one and it snapped the first time I used it. Just make sure you get a metal one. Changing your oil is one of the most satisfying things you can do. I typically take the time to wash out everything with brake cleaner and use the m1c 256 Mobile 1 filter with Amsoil Signature Series 5w30. Sometimes I just lie there on my back under the car and look at things peacefully until the wife or kids come out to see if I'm alive because I have been gone so long...hahahaha.

The oil capacity is 6.6 quarts US (6.25 liters). Make sure your catch pan can hold that much. Don't discover this the hard way like I did.

My experiences with the cap wrench
- They tend to slip
- They get stuck on the oil filter housing
- Not as durable, break easily
- Basically, they suck

If you're going to be changing the oil yourself, I recommend investing in the ASR FTL-01, it will be the best oil filter wrench you will ever use.
- I have never had it slip
- well made, high quality
- does not get stuck on the housing

I paid $40 something when they first came out, now they are only about $23.

I've had one metal filter cap for 5 years now and I haven't had any problems.

I'm with XSV; I've used the Assenmacher TOY640 metal filter cap for more than 10 years, and haven't had any problems. Before buying it, I did have problems with both a plastic cap wrench (that broke), and a stamped metal cap wrench (that slipped).

I've never had problems with my cap either, the oil filter shouldn't be extremely tight anyways

After you do your first oil change. Don't over tighten your cap. The next oil change should be a breeze removing it.

I hand tighten my filter assembly cap (and it bottoms out anyway, can't tighten further).
I can always remove it by hand...time to get to the gym folks !

Well good for you, everyone has different experiences with different tools. Hence why I stated "My experiences with cap wrenches"

I've tried many oil filter cap wrenches from cheap ones to expensive ones, ones that the dealer sold, to ones that were recommended on this site. Each one with a different issue. Must be my luck I guess.

I don't over tighten the house, I lube up the O-ring as well as the threads before putting the housing back, and I also torque the housing down to specs, 18 ft. lbs., If not hand tighten like I use to do on my old vehicles.

So don't quote what I say and put "NOPE" like I was wrong. There always has to be that one person.

maybe that's where you went wrong, never heard of anyone torquing down the oil filter housing. *shrugs*

^^^^I don't measure it either, I hand tighten, but there is a torque spec. and you can't fault him for using it.
