Default IS250 RWD Automatic Transmission interchangeability/compatibility A960E

Hello all,

Finally made an account on CL. Hoping I can get some experience with some other CL members on here. If anyone on here is on the TN, you'll notice my username. Yes, that is me

Long story short, I am the process looking for a new (more like used) transmission for my 2006 IS250 with the A960E. Car has just shy of 150K. The transmission seems to be done for based off my testing and diagnostic I've been doing for the last month. I'll post more information on what went wrong with that in a bit in the next few days.

I understand from this thread https://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-...placement.html that different members had luck with swapping a transmission (a960e) from another model Toyota/Lexus and years with the same transmission. From my understanding, all IS250 2006-2013 A960E and the 4GR-FSE should swap fine. My question is...

Will a A960E from the Gen3 2014-2015 fit the older Gen2 IS250 2006-2013? I've looked at ebay pictures of the newer (2014-2015) and older (2006-2013) A960E from numerous screenshots. Everything looks identical when I visually inspected the photos. Transmission part number for the A960E usually is a 35010-xxxxx. The ones from a 2014/2015 start of the same (35010-xxxxx). I've check the transmission wiring harness (82125-50070) and it seems to fit all A960E 2006-2015 IS250 (How come RA links show up as ***?). I've check the aftermarket rear transmission mount (not the rear cross member P/N) and it seems to fit between the 2006-2014 (A960E) as well per rockauto (DEA/MRC A62065, 2006-2015).

I can get a used transmission from an 2014 IS250 RWD with 51K for a reasonable price, so if it will be a plug n play fit, I would go with it. Per junkyard tech that I spoke to in regards to the transmission, he said the 2014 transmission will work with the 2006. I just need a double check on that. Besides that, next thing though it might be possible ECU issues...but from what it seems like with the other swaps members did from same transmission from different cars, everything worked.

If anyone else had done a A960E swap from a different car, let me know how that went too! I just want my IS to be back on the road...running like how it should!

Let me know if you have any questions, I'll answer them the best I can.

Thanks!!

It should be a plug and play fit, yes.

Thank you! So far from what I've been searching is that it should be a fit. I'll check with the yard to see what their return policies in case something doesn't work out right.

I'd be more interested in how the electrical is going to work out.

I checked every component in the transmission and can't see any issues. They share the same valve bodies and solenoids, as well as the same internal wiring harness and connectors. The only differences between the two transmissions are a couple of the clutches and one of the parking detent shafts.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your insight behind the swap. I called the junkyard yesterday to confirm. The person I spoke to got confused. The 2014 2.5L was an AWD model and NOT a RWD. They have a 2009 2.5L that IS a RWD with 51K. The quote was for the 2009 2.5L RWD for 51K. I know the mainland prices are cheaper, but being in Hawaii (Honolulu), it's a bit pricey. Junkyard priced it at $1800 for it. They will remove the trans for you, includes torque converter, wire harness maybe cut, local pickup. Includes 6 month warranty and shop accepts credit card.

I say for a 2014 A960E, that would be fair (or good deal), but I'm not sure about it being a good deal from a 2009. Has 51K though and for sure it would fit as it is the 2006-2013 range.

Hmmm...

51K from a 2009 or 51K from a 2014 is pretty much the same thing. Mileage matters more than year in this case I think. I would expect the quote for either one to be very similar.

Lolz, just realized I was confusing the A960E with the AA81E. But yeah, I'm surprised Lexus kept it all the same between the generations otherwise.

For all the changes between the 2IS and 3IS, a lot did stay the same.

Okay, that sounds good. $1800 is a ok deal or is it outrageously much?

Thats very good to know that a lot did stay the same. I was looking at the engine and trans and I told myself that a lot did look like it stay the same between the 2IS and early 3IS engine/tranny wise. Parts should be easier to come by in the future as I usually keep my car past what most people consider.

$1800 for a used transmission? I'd look somewhere else.

Yea, I understand it is quite a bit considering I am finding transmissions online for just around $1000. Spoke to a fellow colleague that I work with who works on cars as a hobby. $1800 is a fair price he said, not great considering our market here. I called two other yards and they didn't have anything nor would they give me any quotes on how much they would sell. One yard I know had an 2006 IS250, but it already had 150K+ on it and the transmission and engine was pulled already. Unfortunately being in the middle of the ocean there's not a whole lot of options without shipping it from the mainland via freight. Having a warranty for 6months is a plus, still sucks if I had to pull it out again. I guess its better though rather than shipping it to and from the mainland though.

Went in person to look at the donor car if I do happen to purchase the trans. It was in a frontal collision on the driver side frame, airbags deploy w/ front driver side mangled a bit. From the engine bay, the transmission looked okay.

Need to work out the logistics out a bit with transportation and working on picking up a few more tools before tackling this job. Will try searching a bit more.
