2nd Gen. is250 2006 AWD Clanking sounds coming rear differential area

2006 AWD rear differential or drive axles are making loud clicking sound. The sound goes away when accelerating but comes back with a vengeance when I let off the petal. Any ideas would be helpful. It’s got 250k miles on it.

First, I would test the rear diff drain plug for excessive amounts of metal shavings. Hopefully you're fine there. Then next check out those half shafts.

Axle shaft - possible cause of clonking noise
