Does the exhaust need to be removed to replace extension housing seal?

My extension/tail shaft housing seal is leaking. I expect that the drive shaft would need to be removed, and I was able to move the heat shield a few inches back, but it doesn't look like the heat shield will come off with the exhaust in tact. It doesn't look like the head shield can be moved far enough back under the car to allow proper access when reinstalling the seal. Does anyone know if the exhaust will need to be removed or if the heat shield can be removed without the exhaust? Or otherwise, any other "tricks" to replace this part?

I can't answer the exhaust / heat sheild question but you will want to know that the yoke attached to the output shaft has no free play side to side. That is, if the tail shaft bushing is worn out or the yoke groved, a new seal will likely leak.
Be prepaired that the housing may need a new bushing. Obviously inspect the flex couplings too while the drive shaft is out.

So I did manage to replace the tail shaft seal, with only half the exhaust removed, but I think the seal got compromised based on the angle, and still continued to leak. Note that there was no indication on the ground from the leak, you had to jack the car up to see that it was weeping around the back of the tranny housing. Also, I started to have issues shifting, particularly to 2nd, after a few weeks of changing the seal. So, I decided to do it the correct way a couple weeks ago. I ended up ordering new exhaust bolts, so I could cut the existing ones off. I also disconnected the harness for the O2 sensors from INSIDE the car since I had a hard time unscrewing the actual sensor from the pipe. Once the pipe and shaft were removed, I had full access to properly replace the seal. So far so good. So to answer my own question, yes you can replace the seal without fully removing the exhaust, but definitely not recommended.

Not sure what you mean about dropping the pan and the dipstick stuff, but I can say that downshifting to 2nd, even with heel and toe, got progressively worse as the fluid level fell, I assume from blowing out at the seal. I filled it once before I did the 2nd seal replacement and the issue went away. I also refilled it after I replaced the seal.
The car needs snd clutch, sndvwill probably need 5th gear synchros. My plan is to take the tranny to my mechanic and have him replace whatever needs to be fixed inside the tranny. I need to do some research to see if the newer RA62 manual transmissions are any better than the 06-08
