Default Engine replacement in IS350 to purchase or not?

Hey everyone,

Its has been sometime since I last posted here but I am looking to get back into another IS for a commuter and do a part trade with my wrx.

Here is the deal I was asked to make a trade for my car and some cash on top. I am trying to get a value on the car or what it would be worth:

2006 IS350
52k Miles
Rebuilt Title
Seized engine
Has tech package
I have sourced an engine locally for 1500.00

My wrx is worth 17500 what would be a reasonable amount of cash on top of the deal. I know rebuilt is usually cheaper but I plan to put some miles on it for commuting anyways. It would be a spare car for me so downtime is not an issue. I image and engine replacement would be pretty straight forward or is there anything that would make it difficult? I was offered 10k on top but I was thinking more like 12k

Once the car has anything other than a clean title, the value falls greatly. So in my mind, you're purchasing a '06 IS350 with no engine with a rebuilt title. With that in mind, I would put a $5k value on it, even with the low miles. So yeah, just in the ballpark you were talking about...$12k.

You're the one with the good, running car; make them offer you more and make them sweat about it.

Do you know why the engine let go?

They did not have to many details, I am going to look at the car tonight and make sure everything else is in good shape. I think it is a private car dealership that bought it from auction, just a guess from what I gathered from the address and phone number. If they cant go 12 I will just pass.

I'm thinking you can get a running one for that price of course the miles will be triple... But unless it was garaged all this time the low miles do not imply the paint or interior are OK.

Why the salvage title, how bad was it wrecked. Price seems way to high to me....
Hint if I were even to remotely consider this; bring a battery, Techstream and cable, verify all of computers come up and most everything works or you could really be in trouble later.

And depending on how long its been down, it'll need new tires too.

IMO, I'd pass on the rebuilt title alone. Why trade a perfectly working car, with a clean title, for a car with a seized engine and a rebuilt title? There's really no logic in it. Keep the WRX, or find a working IS350 w/o a rebuilt title.

I think I am going to pass on the car. I was just looking for some extra cash in the pocket mainly for some more home projects but I should keep my car or sell it out right. Mine also has a rebuilt title but has been that way for awhile and the wrx works perfectly for a 2016.

Seems way to high of a price. I bought my 08 IS350 with a clean title at auction for 4400 with a seized engine. It had around 100k at the time.

I bought a salvaged title 07 is350 for just under $5 about 18 months ago. The damage was only to the underside of the car, hence the seized motor. I check craigslist in my area for 350s and the lowest I’ve seen a salvage title listed had nearly 200k and was asking above $6. Theses cars hold their value much better than Infiniti and anything from Germany.

edit; the swap is pretty straight forward, hardest part was the torque convert bolts because there wasn’t a easy path to them in the car.

What causes these IS350 engines to seize?
I thought since it's a Toyota, it would be reliable?!?!

Well since both of the seized engines mentioned in this thread are from cars with salvage/rebuilt titles, one would assume it was from the accident, flood or whatever other catastrophic loss caused them to be totaled in the first place. Possibly an accident that compromised the oil pan and left the engine operating without lubrication?

The 2GR-FSE engine in the IS350 is incredibly reliable motor.
