I had an interesting experience with my 2012 IS 350 today. Went to the pool and swam for a good 30 minutes before I realized I forgot my key fob in my swim shorts! At that moment I thought it was totally damaged. I wasn't hopeful it could be salvaged but in a desperate attempt I disassembled it in left it in the 105 degree Texas heat to dry.
After a good 15 minutes of letting it dry, I assembled it and to my surprise and delight, it worked without any glitch!

Applying too much heat like using hair dryer may cause damage.

While we're here, clean water (not pool water) isn't all the harsh. In fact some electronics are directly cooled with Deionized water. Its the foriegn particles in the water that when left behind spur on growth that damage and attack the solder and copper of the circuit board.
Like for example a Coke/milk/coffee spill on a laptop will kill it if not cleaned up. As the sugars eat the circuit board traces over time. De-energize the laptop, rinse with warm soap and water. Rinse with warm water. Remove as much water as possible and then place in a bag of desiccant or rice for several days.
Oils come off with solvent. Sugars come off with soap and water. The important thing is to de-energize as quick as possible to reduce the effects of electrolysis. Then clean and dry.

Most times it should be okay...although not a given to just go in water with it haha!
As long as the equipment is dried off and no corrosive liquid is on there (the above post is a good example) it should be okay. Same goes for flash drives and SD cards. As long as they are dry off as soon as possible and if they wasn't dump in salt water kind of deal...

Ya, 99% of the time its the crap in the water that does the damage.
Another example is those who use engine degreasers and pressure wash debris into connections. Once left there for months the debris contents erodes the plating and connectors. Re-washing with mild detergent and then plain water can mitigate this risk.
