Question '08 IS250 AWD CV Boots — $1600 vs. $150?

Hi All,

It's been a while since I've posted here, but that's mostly due that after all these years, I haven't had any major issues since the carbon build-up recall except for an ECM that's linked to emissions control that died at around 135K.

Anyway, my 2008 IS250 AWD just rolled over 140K miles and just had its service at my local Lexus dealership. After I got the car back, my adviser pointed out that there are extremely small leaks around the CV boot clamps and told me it's something to keep in mind when I come back for the next service. I asked how much it would cost to take care of it, and for both front CV boot clamps, it would cost approximately $1,600. That sounded about right, since I had them replaced on my 2004 GX470 a couple years ago also for about the same price.

After a bit of research, I reached out to a couple Japanese auto shops asking what it would cost to replace the CV boot clamps if they're leaking. Most came in at around $150-$200, including parts & labor and would need about 2 hours to complete. So, before I dig deeper with my dealership why the huge price discrepancy, I was wondering if anyone knew why it would be that large? I think it's labor intensive because the axles have to come off, but otherwise... confused.

Any comments, help, suggestions, greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Kermee

EDIT [Quick Notes]: I'm the original owner, purchased new from Lexus dealer over 10 years ago; It's been a rock solid daily-driver vehicle. — The CV boots are the original ones on the vehicle and have never been replaced.

Well, the thing with Lexus is that they won't JUST install new boots and/or boot clamps; they'll replace the entire half shaft. I'm sure that is why the price is so high.

An import shop will gladly JUST do what you ask them to do; but will a new clamp fix the leak? Maybe. But more than likely you'll want them, at a minimum, is replace both the boot and the clamp. Of course, fresh grease for the boot is required as well.

Good luck!

Awesome! Thank you so much. That makes a LOT more sense to me now. — I think I'll most likely go the way of the import shop and make sure they replace both the boot and clamp, along with the fresh grease inside. I'm not convinced that the entire half shaft needs to be replaced just yet. Though I could be entirely wrong, but I think it's a decent gamble. — Thanks!

Cheers,
Kermee

Maybe so, maybe not Rather than trying to guess, why not just ask you Lexus dealer for a written estimate so you can see exactly what they are planning on doing?

But that'll cost $120 or whatever it is now just to get it in writing.
