Moral of the story. Top tier fuels help and watch the Noack or volatility of your oil. This requires a conscience effort

I'm due for an oil change. So I saw this browsing for oil at Walmart. Has anyone seen, or used it yet?

Castrol is claiming 3X better at break down than Mobil 1. It's probably just marketing BS. The original regular Castrol E is Dexos Gen 2 vs the HM is not. As far as I know the HM oil will probably do more harm than good. Too many cleaning additives will probably find leaks on a HM Engine anyway.

High mileage oils are to contain additives that help keep seals flexible and compliant. But if your vehicle already has seals that have turned to stone, then there's nothing any HM oil can do about that.

Thicker oils tend to have lower Noack but most lack GM Dexos Generation 1 and 2 branding

Search for the lowest Noack in 5w30 w/perhaps a good glob of PAO or even Esters. Redline, Amsoil, Belgian Castrol (0w30), and many of the high end Euro oils have exceedingly great Noack scores

I'm going to try the Mobil 1 EP. It was tested by Amsoil in 2012, and has a low Noack. It's also easily readily available at any local Auto Parts store. Pennzoil Ultra looks pretty good too.

Excellent choice, excellent. Nice slug of PAO...one of the top 5 best oils that are affordable.

Unfort. Pennzoil doesn't make Ultra anymore. It used to be the best oil in America (for the price)
If you find it and buy, let me know ASAP.
Pennzoil Platinum is good
Pennzoil Ultra-Platinum is sketchy for DI cars. Terrible Noack.

Does anyone use Renewable Lubricants Bio Syn-Xtra? I just put it in because of how highly it is praised in the RCF oil thread, working well for me so far!

Noack is 11.9 which is OK, but it is low ash and has a nice ad pack. For the $ Amsoil or Redline is better

Yep too late. It's gone from their website. I had to order the Mobil 1 EP online. Local 3 Wal-Mart's didn't have it in stock I gave up, and called it a day.

Thanks for the articles! Always been using Castrol Edge Full Synthetic but found some Pennzoil Platinum on sale and am going to give that a shot.

Slightly off topic but an observation is the owners posting in this thread are DIY who also push their vehicles when opportunity allows (maybe??). That said how many miles/months are you leaving that synthetic oil in use?

FWIW: I would be reluctant to use HM oils as the esther which induces swelling in rubber seals has a net long term effect of hardening those same seals. Not a polymer engineer but having worked at AAMCO trans for 6 years and saw many try to stop both internal and external oil leaks when the product is gone (it evaporates), they typically leaked everywhere! JM2C...

5K intervals for me Mobil 1 Full Syn, and once or twice Castrol Edge Full Syn. Since I've owned my car purchasing it at around 38k on it. Now it has 82k on the odometer. At about 50k I looked at the valves, and they started to show a little carbon build up when changing plugs. Nothing too concerning as of yet. I just installed new coil packs on Bank 2, and new plugs. The valves looked about the same condition. So hopefully my somewhat spirited drives helps with that build up.
