Shift lever not wanting to go into Park

Shift lever not wanting to go into Park
I noticed today that my shift lever didnt want to go into "P" Park. I pressed down the button under the cap to try unlock it but that didnt do anything. I can put a little more force into the shifter to put it in Park and I can but the indicator on the cluster still says Reverse and if I let off the brakes, it moves back just like its still in reverse even though the lever is in Park. I also looked at the fuse diagrams and had no luck. How do I fix this?

Two things - either something came loose or something came loose!
From the tunnel to the trans is easy to inspect the linkage to the transmission. However it is less likely to to fail as all the parts under the car are steel. That said head to garage with a lift **preferably NOT** a transmission shop and have them inspect the linkage from the cabin to the lever on the trans.
If nothing is found either the hardware at the shifter near the console is failing or much more rare something in the trans came loose.
So, inspect under the car.
Inspect the lever at the console.
If neither reveal, the pan comes off the trans for inspection.
Make sense?
