I need some help as my car is currently in a Lexus private dealer that has all the ex techs who are certified from an actual Lexus dealership. They are pretty legit and all have outstanding reviews and all that.

I have a Lexus IS250 2009 with 145K miles and basically the Fuel Pump is about to go bad. It would be this bad rattling sound that started coming and found out it is the front Fuel Pump which is both Electric and Mechanical. The Lexus IS250 (which I did not know) actually has two Fuel Pumps the one in front and the back one which is all Electrical and is working fine for me still. Should the fuel pump have gone this bad at this mileage the the actually question of the front Fuel Pump being almost $1200 itself. I have seen other cheaper ones as low as $200 or $400, but I know these might be too cheap and can probably break fairly quickly. Should I get maybe a Toyota Fuel Pump or is this not a good route to take? I just needed some advise as to if I should go ahead and get the OEM Lexus part or if its okay to get a cheaper one less than $1200 since I do plan on keeping the car and would want it to last me a few more years. The piece is $1200 and I'm being asked to pay with labor a total of about $1600. Is this a decent rate to replace the front Fuel Pump? Please advise!

Yes, I just replaced the one in our '08 IS150 that went out at 151k so it seems right about 150k is the sweet spot. Of course, some will last shorter and some longer but I wouldn't be surprised if at 145k the fuel pump went out. As you've noticed these are very expensive at the dealer! I ended up purchasing a used fuel pump assembly off eBay for $100 and replacing it myself. It's under the back seat and only took about 30 min. So far so good. Eventually I'll get around to rebuilding the actual fuel pump inside the assembly and then I'll be good to go for a while.

Just realized you mentioned the front fuel pump....mine was the rear. However, I would still take the same approach. Try and find a good used OEM part on eBay and have your indy replace it. That should save you some money.

Thanks for your help, but I just got more info that its not just the Fuel Pump itself instead the entire Fuel Assembly. Lexus apparently has the whole package that goes along with it therefore that's why the price is what it is. So I guess this means I can't just pick up a Fuel Pump.. Any idea about this?

 

You should still be able to find what you need on eBay for much less. For example, here is a photo of a high pressure fuel pump which comes with hoses, lines, etc. that I found. I think this is what they are saying you need but I'm not sure. Of course you would still need your indy to do the install but it should come out to be a lot less expensive.

 

There is a big issue with the wiring harness getting screwed up and reporting 0PSI/No start. That could (maybe) also affect the dump valve, make noise, etc. . Not saying it can't fail but the mileage seems a bit low. Did they verify fuel pressure with the scan tool?

 

Yes they eventually found it via the tool scan. It actually took a while to figure out where exactly it was coming from, but finally figured out that it was the front Fuel Pump and that the whole assembly would be required since that's just the way Lexus makes there cars. Even they were surprised as they do not usually have to repair this part not that they were saying it doesn't happen its still rare.

I do remember at about 139,000 I had ran the car empty when it started stalling and forced my way to a gas station.. I know stupid, but I was deliberately looking at my fuel moving until tank to empty knowing that it should not be a problem as I can still manage to keep going. So once I got to about 10 miles left it started stalling. I forced the car to somehow keep going another mile or two until I got into a gas station. So I guess maybe something that would happen at a higher mileage happened earlier due to that one time I ran out of gas. That was the first and last day I ever let my car run below half tank of fuel ever since. I got this car at about 137,000 miles so not sure how often that had happened before. There was just one previous owner a young white lady 25-30 years of age who owned this car if that helps at all since women at that age are pretty mature drivers lol.
