How to adhere something to dash without damaging it?

I certainly wouldn't go destroying my dash for a $20 mount to be honest. I don't know if you've had your dash replaced or not, but I certainly wouldn't go anywhere near it with a drill if it was replaced already, nor would I want to put any adhesive on it to risk any future damage. I would cut my losses and just look into a windshield or vent mount, maybe sell it or just pass it off to a friend/family member who could use one.

Hmmmm..... ever got a rock chip windshield and then over the next few heat cycles watch a crack rip across the glass???
That dash covering has surface tension and if you pop holes in it it will begin a process of releasing that tension as it tears and splits. Surely you've seen dashes split wide open before? Give it reason to tear far and wide and chances are it will.
If determined to adhere something to the dash begin by taking for example a plexiglass circle, heat it in the oven until soft and lay a cloth over the dash and swiftly press and form the plastic to the contour of the dash. Allow to cool. Drill a hole in the plastic and mount your hardware Discarding whatever base it came with. Now apply what ever adhesive you think will work.
With a form fitting base the adhesive won't be fighting itself to release. Its like a round peg in a square hole. It doesn't work until the surfaces fit each other.

Have you seen weather techs cup holder mount ?
And I just open the ash tray and turn my phone on its side and prop it up against the radio. Works pretty good even with the phone's power cord attached.
