When they called to tell me this, I was patient knowing full well that the code would come on again and I would just have to take it back. When my girlfriend went to pickup the car, the service adviser drove the car inside and the check engine light came back on. So they kept it over night. When speaking to the adviser on the phone that following day, she stated the tech believes the cold weather has something to do with it as the car did not duplicate while inside the shop and warm. Over the phone, she told me the tech is confident that the timing chain is the issue.

My girlfriend has the print out from the service department. I will read it tonight and post up for all to review.

You could check bank 2 pretty easy by pulling the valve cover. It will give you a good idea if the primary chain is worn. But first you need the spec. Bank 2 as in the drivers side? Wouldn't it be harder due to having to remove the intake? I would think Bank 1 is the easier side but I could be wrong.

Something seems of with their conclusion. Chain stretch is not random. It doesn't repair itself or get better. It is constant.

What brand and weight of oil are you using? You might change it up and see if results vary. I used Castrol 5w30 Conventional. What type and/or weight do you suggest? I am all for trying something along these lines as I am not sold the chain in the issue.

Please see my responses above in red.

I would like to say, I am not looking to take the easy way out or the cheap way out. If the issue is the timing chain, I will open the motor up and replace everything, needed or not. I am just trying to exhaust all other possibilities and really understand the issue.

It sounds like they did open up the valve covers and check the timing chain for wear. If that is the case, hard to argue with their assessment. I do know, they told me I couldn't come get it right away because the car was torn apart so we kept their loaner for the extra day.

With this, do you think it is even worth trying a different weight of oil or just begin the tear down?

To be honest, no miracle oil will fix a stretched timing chain.
Hope you are prepared for this tear down if you’re going to do it yourself.
All the info you need to confrim the issue has been discussed here and by the techs assesment.

There are a couple of threads on checking timing.
Look at the pdf here.
https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gs-...alignment.html

I'm sure there are more. Just the first one I found.

Timing marks wornt be necessarily dead nuts.
Looking at the PDF, each chain has a painted mark which they use to line up on the marks on the gears.
Thats what they really look for when they are lining these chains up.
Marks on the cam caps are just “around the area” marks”.
I agree its silly to try to line up using the marks on the cam caps.
Use the chain marks and thats all you need.

Ya but getting a chain to line up at any time other than during installation is a PITA. You'll be spinning the crank for a while trying to get it in the right cycle. The exhaust cams may never line up.

Knowing the oil that came out of this machine, I would bet the guides are 80% more to blame than the chains themselves.

That said be sure to soak the new chain in oil way before it ever gets installed and don't forget to check the oil pump clearance while the cover is off. Maybe if it's not too expensive just replace it!

OP's last post was this thread in 2019. Not sure what happened. I wouldn't wait for a response..

What do you know about the car and its history?

I was looking at this code and found this thread. I also suspect that i have a stretched timing chain. I really don't want to spend 4k to fix this issue
