Default What do the vents behind the rear bumper do

There are two vents behind the rear bumper. One on each side with some sort of film covering flap. What are these vents for? The film completely disintegrates over time and I'm thinking could I just cover it with a vinyl wrap or something? What will I be blocking from venting of I covered it?

It allows the interior of the car to be able to “breathe” & not cause pressure to build up inside the cabin. There has been a couple of story of the IS sun roofs randomly chattering due to the pressure in the cabin building up and getting to high finding a way to release 2 out of three of those were caused from the rear vents not being functional. Hope that gives a little insite .

The part you're looking for is 62930-12161, and it should be about $30 for each one. Totally worth replacing; those keep the trunk moisture-free, and reduce the buffeting from open windows or sunroofs while driving, and helps the doors shut more smoothly (the vents allow pressure built up from a slammed door to dissipate from the trunk).

Oh yeah, I had a humidity problem. Kept getting fog and at in inside of trunk and cabin.

Fixed and problem solved

Water and humidity in the trunk kill the amp. These pressure ducts need to be replaced once every couple years to keep the moisture and exhaust fumes from entering the car..

If seated in a car that has them sealed and say 2 occupants swiftly close the doors (windows up, roof sealed), it'll nearly pop your ear drums. Don't plug them!

In a Top Gear episode there was car known for building horrible pressure and launching the sun roof skyward. They slammed the doors and yep, off it flew!

PS - without them, the car will be a mildew bomb.

It is a very good thing to have these replaced, especially the passenger side one since almost right behind that vent is the factory stereo amp.

Has any member removed the driver side vent per video below and installed it as well without any issues? I'm unable to install new vent after removing the old vent. Vent is easy to access and remove however, installing it is something different than what the narrator states in the video, "Just put it in like that and you're done". Unfortunate video didn't document the installation as well. There is a wire harness that is somewhat in the way. If it was relocated during the vent install, perhaps it would allow for more clearance. Unsure how the clips fattening harness to frame open (see 1st. & 2nd photos below). Also, would someone know the tool (manufacture / model etc.) used to remove cargo trim clip in third photo? Lastly, came across an unused connector bundled in the harness near vent opening (last photo). Any idea what it may be available for (option not installed etc.)?

Great DIY, thanks. Does anybody know what the function is for this flap? It just dawned on me that it is a relief vent when you close the doors...maybe. Hence the flapper door. Also could be the vent for the gas fumes in case it leaks...anybody know for sure?

I know this is an old thread but I want to bring it back so other members of this club know. I strongly believe Lexus "genius" designers have decided to make those elastomer flaps from biodegradable plastic, why am I saying this? I took those vent assemblies out and the flaps are shrunk and once I touched them they crumbled. I went to the junk yards saw old scraped vehicles and the flaps on them are still intact. How horrible those designers are, shame on them? Lexus should supply redesigned vent assemblies to all its cars that are affected FREE of charge. They also should fire those guys who designed/specified those flaps.
