I see that there are lots of threads for DIY installation of aftermarket navigation systems here, but many of them go back fifteen years, so I wonder if they're out of date? I'm not a DIYer when it comes to cars anyway.

Can anyone recommend a screen unit with navigation for my car? Would it be worth getting a nav unit from a slightly newer IS from a wrecker's? I'd also like to have a reverse screen, so would need to get a camera to have installed around the back license plate. Would this be fairly easy to do (for my mechanic, not me)?

IMO try to get something that supports Carplay or Android Auto rather than factory nav.
That way you get 100% up to date navigation, google maps, waze, etc.
