I have a 2007 IS 250 RWD that is having intermittent transmission issues and it is unclear if they are mechanical or electrical. When I go from R to D, the car will stall 25% of the time. When it stalls, both engine light and battery sign come on. Could this mean that I need to get a new battery? When I put in the code reader, no codes are read at this point. When I put car in N and restart, it works fine.
i suspect your alternator is bad and not charging the battery properly.
try this: jump start the car and keep the other battery attached as you select R and D (but obviously don't move - just engage the gear). if the car remains on, then likely you have a weak battery.

Alternator was changed 2 years ago.
The issue is that the stalling doesn’t always happen. Hopefully next time it happens close to home and I can try as you suggested with the other car.
