What is this noise from the dash? (sound clip posted)
NOTE: I recommend using head phones and turn up the volume when playing the clip
2007 Lexus IS 250
From the passenger side or middle dash area (definitely not driver side) I hear this noise as if a tiny metal ball would be loose and moving to the vibration, see the clip posted below.
It only happens while driving and not during stand-still, the noise gets bigger if the road is not as smooth
This noise only started in recent weeks as the weather got warmer. I definitely did not hear this sound during the winter when it was cold.
I hear this same rattle/noise and it was coming from the center a/c vents. For the meantime, my quick remedy is by pressing it using 2 fingers. But I'm glad I already know where it's coming from. I'll pull it one day and put some soft side velcro tape.
I got rid of the same noises by having a piece of EPE polyurethane foam sheet (1"x2" and 0.5" thick) inserted between the windshield and dashboard right at that location as shown in the picture below.
Whether the weather is too cold or too hot it still makes these noises because Lexus designers did not know or did not want to know how to specify materials that should have similar expansion and won't make these annoying noises. The funny thing in 2005 and onward Lexus Canada had commercials saying "Lexus the Pursuit of Perfection" after of a couple of years they changed their motto.
