The IS can keep the same engine, but it needs a better transmission (faster shifts and torque converter lock up from 2nd gear on up like in the IS-F) as an option for the 3.5 L, as well as sportier seats.
If they don't add those things, I don't see any reason why I'd need to upgrade from my '07 IS350 w/ X-pkg & nav. All I'd be getting is a different look, which to me, really isn't worth spending 45k.

lexus must have come and realized (maybe a long time ago) that most people dont care about what chassis is underneath the body as long as the look is fresh and MPG and horsepower are both bumped through some drivetrain update

Don't know if anyone's thought about this, but will the next IS surely debut new engines? The '06 GS was denied the 3.5 liter V6 that debuted on the production IS350 in late 2005, yet also the '07 ES received it as well as the '07 RX. Maybe a 3.6 liter IS360? Everyone should monitor patent and trademark filings from Toyota Jidosha K.K. as all these car-related media outlets can miss things that have been hidden in plain sight for weeks to months.

I agree, if Lexus wants the car to be a driver's car they need a transmission that gives the driver full control. The transmission also needs rev matching on downshift. E.g., the Scion FR-S / Sub BRZ has this (not sure about the torque lock part on the Scion) or a 6 MT option.

this sounds really stupid.. but why don't they put the 3.0l from the 2006 gs300?
I always thought that was a nice engine. Good power and MPG.
And it would've given the is250 a nice boost in the power department, while not threatening the is350..
i can't imagine how underpowered the 2014 is250 (if it is a 2.5l) would feel compared to it's competitors, especially if the vehicle weight increases even more..
I will be in the market to buy a new car in 2014.. and just like in the previous years, is250 will feel underpowered/overpriced, and is350, just too damn fast for me

All I can tell you is that the IS has lost many sales to the 3-series for this very reason alone because it happened around me for several times already, be it the E46 or the E90 (don't know about the F30 but I'm sure it's not less spacious). If the main competition offers such flexibility and Lexus doesn't, then it's Lexus's problem because they've excluded themselves from being considered by those who have needs to travel with friends occasionally but don't want to give up sporty driving and can't afford the GS just yet. I've ridden in the right backseats (not behind the driver) of both the IS250 and the E46 330i for extended trips and the one in the IS was a much more uncomfortable experience and I'm rather average in stature at 5'10".

The 3.0l is heavy as heck, thirsty, and an inline 6 that would likely neither fit nor offer any boost in actual performance.
