Default Motortrend IS350 Fsport 1st test

"Cradled inside the F Sport's cabin, I imagined I was sitting in more of a pod than a car since it stayed planted through the sharpest turns. Even my little furry companion in the front passenger seat wasn't sliding around through the bends thanks to the low-slung passenger seat.

The F Sport's cabin is a nice place to spend time, and you won't get bored with all the gadgetry there is to play with. The electrostatic climate-control switches were easy to work with, as was Lexus Remote Touch, though it may not be for everyone. And let's face it; the LFA-inspired tachometer and sliding ring will probably never get old. It's simply genius. What did get old was the one-touch turn signal stalk. It was too sensitive, and when trying to cancel the signal, I would often activate the turn signal for the other direction.

Does anyone feel like we Lexus fans are sitting on one of the best kept secrets in automotive history?

That a non-German brand just built arguably the best handling mainstream attainable sport sedan on the market in the 2014 IS and many mainstream media, out of inertia or brand-blindedness, keep on insisting on the dynamic "superiority" of the German brands (specifically BMW ) despite how much more composed and confidence-inspiring the IS is when tackling a winding road.

It's when you get to grass-roots reviewers that the capabilities of the 2014 IS chassis is truly appreciated :

Raves about chassis :

Ranks 2014 Lexus IS over BMW 3 series despite themselves :

Superiority of IS over the Germans on the autocross :

http://www.examiner.com/list/3-germa...tocross-course

Finally :

This last reviewer doesn't seem to be a Lexus fanboy in the least. In fact he outright states that he hates the IS styling and would rather get an Audi S4 but matter-of-factly says that the new IS not only outhandles the 335i but is ON PAR with the BMW M3 :

The Lexus IS350 F Sport is a wild contrast of the best and worst things you can find in a performance sedan. The new 2014 model is an impressive leap forward, putting it ahead of the new BMW 335i in terms of performance, interior and reliability. Unfortunately, the exterior styling and price turn me off.
What can I say, this mid size sedan handles like a coupe. It feels like it’s on rails and is well planted to the asphalt. The car’s handling is on par with a BMW M3. Steering and overall feel is direct, precise and balanced. It’s a mid sized sedan that feels like a small Coupe. The car is nimble and responsive, yet very comfortable. The car gets better as you go faster.
I don't know about you guys but such man-in-the-street reviews ring more authentic with me...

I agree with the critic when he says that the one-touch turn signal stalk is too sensitive. I found that to be true when I test drove the car

I find the new IS 350 F Sport to deliver a driving experience signficantly superior to the new BMW 335i (f30) and to my wiffe's 2013 Audi A5 cab. I find the handling and "fun factor" of the 2014 IS to be on par with my retired 2002 BMW 330xi (e46).

This may be a dumb question but why don't they ever compare the IS to a TSX or TL since they are both Japanese? It's always BMW, Infiniti, merc, or Audi.

i guess you can compare a TSX with an IS250 only. TL is much bigger than an IS, more like a 5 series

But they are in the same price range. At one point I was considering a TL SH-AWD myself.

TL and TSX are FWD, no comparison. No performance factor with TL, S-type is meh.

I personally think its because not too many people think Acura are at these guy's level. I dont think they're bad, but Acura just doesnt come to mind.
When I think luxury flagship cars I think 7series, LS, A8, S class. Not Acura RL or TL with awd.
This is obviously how I take it though.

SH-AWD is a kick *** driving machine. It really is a blast. Wait till next year for the TLX with all of the cool tech you see on the Accord now.
