Thumbs up 5,414 sold in December...

Obviously the 3IS IS is a huge hit! The target was 32k so they are well beyond the pace since July.

December is always a strong month and it's good to see that people want a bold and sporting car from Lexus!

I think that momentum will settle into 2014 at a sustainable 3.5-4k per month. Hitting 40k sales in 2014 is do-able.

Matt Farah at the Smoking Tire was right when testing a pre-production 2014 3IS he said that if Lexus could bring the car in under 50K they'd have a winner. I'm impressed -- he was spot on.

I'm shocked Lexus is selling such a polarizing car so well. Their marketing is very good.

What I have noticed is that Lexus is spending a lot of money on marketing and their ad agency has come up with a couple of sexy TV spots. I watch the Q50 spots and they say nothing about the Q50. Some guy in pajamas gets a Q50 because he was nice to Santa. I watch the 2 and I gotta say the Lexus ads generate heat. They show the car off as cool and beautiful. We Americans are suckers for good marketing imo.

The Lexus ad agency perfectly aligned their TV spots with what Lexus wants to do with the IS, what the IS is, and the demographic they want to attract. It is laser focused. And the Lexus ad ends with "it's your move". Frigging brilliant. True or not those 3 words say to the audience and the competition that this car revolutionary. It really is quite good work.

The Q50 marketing imo reflects that Infiniti and their ad agency don't quite know yet what to do with the car in regards to what it is i.e. luxury, performance, Japanese Volvo safe, cutting edge, etc. or who to market to i.e. young families, young people, old people, etc. -- so they settled on yuppies.

First up - Infiniti

Now for Lexus -

The commercial is so hot -- people are searching for the commercial actress. The Lexus ads are so good they've gone viral.

For BMW, the #s are pretty terrible compared to the auto industry as a whole for the year of 2013, and for good reason. Their new cars are lifeless (this coming from a BMW owner of 12 years, on my 4th BMW).

#s are propped up by a ton of new models introduced this past year - 320i, 328d, 3 series GT, 4 series, 6 series, 6 series gran coupe, x5, x1. The BMW light trucks division...wow!

Why are you saying are terrible? The 3 series (IS direct competitor) sold 3 times more in Dec alone comparing with IS and 50% more than last year. Which might mean that people choose BMW 3 series over IS. Lexus lost the battle in 2010. Is trying now but I don;t see them on top without changing those old power-train to compete with BMW

Lexus is not expected to reclaim its No. 1 luxury ranking, which it held from 2000 through 2010, anytime soon. The top spot “is a possibility, but not for a while,” said Jeremy Acevedo, industry analyst for Edmunds.com, an automotive pricing and data company in Santa Monica, California. “I just can’t see Lexus with its current lineup getting back ahead of the Germans.

sales #s of 3/4 series simply destroy those of 3IS. According to these numbers IS is far far behind in terms of sales. And it is also true that IS has the most ancient engine in its class. I can't believe it!

You guys are comparing apples to oranges. The 3 sales include the 4 coupe sales. The 3 is the volume car, like the ES is the volume Lexus sedan.

The IS is a niche car with a sales goal of only 32k but it eclipsing that. No car in the class will compete with the 3/4 in sales. The IS and 3/4 have very very different purposes and sales goals though they are in the same class.
