2014 IS350 Cracked Windshield
Hey guys, so here's my story. I was driving to work this morning and I was sitting at a red light, waiting for it to turn green. As I'm waiting, I heard something hit my windshield and I immediately see a 12 inch crack in my windshield going from the edge of the driver side towards the center of the windshield. It's directly in my line of sight when I drive. My question is, do you guys think it's possible that Lexus could change this under warranty? Considering the fact that I wasn't moving and I was waiting at a red light, could the windshield be defective?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Interesting to see how Lexus handle this! I think if you could prove that the crack started from the edge (I.e. defect or installation issue) then I dont see why they wouldn't replace it.
Your insurance should cover this with deductible for Comprehensive Coverage. However, they might refuse to give you OEM windshield (as opposed to Lexus will replace with OEM one under factory warranty).
You should contact the dealership ASAP.

This sounds to me more like an insurance claim, not a warranty claim.

I understand but what could possibly be going fast enough, especially since I'm at a dead stop, to do this kind of damage? Plus, whatever it was, it had to be really small because I didn't see anything hit the window and I was looking straight out of it.

Is there any signs of a chip where it started?
Maybe you could just call a service adviser at your dealership and ask for their opinion? I've done that many times before and it has saved me unnecessary trips to the dealer.
My comment just stems from my experience, which, when it comes to glass, has found it easier to just go through insurance. Everyone's situation will be different, though. Good luck and keep us posted.

Try to use a microscope and see if you can find any evidence of anything hitting the windshield (some kind of small cradle looking spot). If not, then you could try to convince the dealership to replace it. A decent dealership should not have any issue since they will be fully reimbursed by Lexus for the costs. I would try the dealership route first because of no deductible and OEM glass replacement.

This is clearly not a warranty issue. Asking your dealer to replace the windshield under warranty because something small hit it slowly and you don't think it should have broken is a bit strange. It is like telling them someone gently inserted a small nail into your tire so they should replace that for free, as well, when it goes flat.
Things happen and this is why you have insurance (hopefully).
If you get the dealer to replace the windshield on their dime then kudos to you. I would keep buying cars from them in the future.

this happens all the time in colorado. it usually starts with a rock chip. then you have the defroster on and it will crack all the way across the dash because of the heated glass and the stress crack from a single rock that hit your WS previously.

Definitely an insurance claim issue - it will be dam hard to prove to a dealership that the windshield was faulty from the start.

Sorry to hear that though.
