Onepointon -- Thanks for looking into it further with Lexus. I poked around a bit too with the car on ramps and didn't find any loose heat shields. Thumping on the catalytic converter / exhaust components didn't reveal any rattles. I removed the intake and gave that a good shake -- nothing rattles inside the noisemaker.

The issue can't be with the engine itself, it's a mature design (and I think the same goes for the accessories?).

The sound is pegged to higher RPM = higher flow and vacuum through the intake, higher flow, pressure and heat through the exhaust plumbing, both of which are new designs. Probably the only part worth contemplating in the intake is the noisemaker (new part), which we can test by removing it and plugging the hole in the intake pipe.

In the exhaust, all of the heat shields, cats, resonators, etc are new and that will be a lot more difficult to troubleshoot.

Nothing in the interior or body changes with RPM except that which could be excited by vibrations... but you would think road vibrations would then occasionally cause the sound if something was loose.

Wow; didn't know!

Another problem; argh.

Going to stay tuned to those threads.

Thanks.

Honda had a similar problem?

Was it a major one?

I'm experiencing this same rattle / high pitch noise between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm.

Not previously present, now happening under load and not normal.

Difficult to tell where it's coming from; passenger-side, maybe?

All stock, no modifications to my car.

Plan to stay tuned to this thread.

Thanks. :|

When trying to think of the best way to describe the noise, it's similar to a high pitch 'static' sound from a radio or TV, but more physical sounding...

I read somewhere that this car is a true dual exhaust whereas the 2IS is a split exhaust. Not sure if this could be the problem manifesting on this gen but not earlier gens. If I had to bet I'd put my money on hades281 and the noise maker theory though.

I'm not convinced that it's the noisemaker without testing.... I'm just trying to think of "new" parts not carried over from 2IS that are directly affected by engine speed but not affected by regular road vibrations.

I hope you guys are not referring to this high pitched metallic whine that usually happens on sport/sport + mode at higher end of RPM band, are you? If so, I don't think it is a problem. It seems completely normal for our cars. If not, then my apologies.

Salvadorik -- Agreed, the intake whine that you are talking about is totally normal. We're talking about a crackling... rattling sound with an irregular rhythm.
