I just added an alpine mrx-m110 amp and a type R sub. The setup is about 1000 watts. I was Worried about the same issue, I went the extra mile and got a 3 fared capacitor. The sub woke the system up and the car performs great. Zero drain. The extra capacity doesn't draw from the Alternator and I'm using 4awg wiring.

Long and short. Just get a capacitor. The whole car is basically a computer. It's worth the 100 extra bucks for the protection in my opinion
