RWD even with performance winter tires is MUCH safer to drive then AWD with all-season tires. Its a fact. And no you dont need any skills whatsoever because todays electronics are pretty sophisticated when it comes to providing traction for RWD (actually electronics have been doing it for many years now). AWD have huge number of sales because most people have no clue (at least in USA). Of course AWD with winter tires is the real winner.
Tirerack tested AWD BMW with AS and RWD BMW with snows, RWD won in braking and handling, acceleration was even.
I had M3, 335i, and now have S2000 and just bought my wife IS350 RWD. I constantly drive to ski resorts and even took my M3 and S2000 though snow blizzard when driving was banned in Massachusetts
