Default New break options

Just hit my 30k service and I need new front breaks and rotors on my 2014 IS 350 F sport.

Any advice on aftermarket?

Thanks in advance!

Wrek!

Not sure about after market brakes, but if you want to stick OEM, you may want to consider the non F Sport pads. They're a great low dust option.

New rotors at 30K? Only if you've been abusing the brakes. This sounds like "additional dealer profit" to me. If they are warped they can be turned on the car for a few bucks each at a qualified brake shop.

In my experience, oem rotors are pretty close to min thickness after going through one set of pads. Also tuning the rotors is probably not worth the hassle/$ since new rotors are pretty affordable online.

This must be a Lexus thing; my last two Toyotas went > 100K miles with the original rotors. I did turn the front rotors on one car at about 90K miles because of brake judder. They were still within the factory specs for wear. But I'm pretty gentle on the brakes, doing a lot of highway driving and usually getting 50-60K miles on a set of pads.

I live in central California. There are a lot of enjoyable winding back roads and valley passes, i enjoy them often.

So I wasn't shocked when they said i need new rotors. I'm going to have my local mechanic take a look before i make any decisions. At this point though if I'm going to change them out I may go with something that is a little more aggressive, and sexy to the eye.

My rotors were (and pads) were near done at 20k.

Says the dealer, or an independent mechanic?

+1. I dont see the OEM rotors being out of spec. after only one pad life. Should be able to resurface and be good to go for a while. Min. thickness is 27mm on my F Sport RWD.

Aftermarket brakes are fine for daily driving. Check Rockauto, autohaus, etc. Ceramic replacement are pretty cheap if I remember correctly,

Says a reputable independent mechanic. I also looked at the pads and rotors myself and they were definitely worn out.

no need to replace rotors that are above the min. thickness.
no need to resurface rotors if everything is fine.
install new pads and perform the proper bed-in procedure.

F-Sport models will wear through rotors much faster than non-F-Sport models. The Textar T4146 pads are not kind to rotors. My rotors were at minimum spec after 30,000 miles (measured by myself), and are nearing it again at 60,000 miles.
