Regular Gas

i don't know the full details...but the higher octane gas burns differently and helps with the engine....something to do with compression ratios and if you constantly put lower grade then required...it can cause engine knocking. I read about it once by doing google search but i don't remember all the details.

You buy a nice expensive car do as the manufacturer specifies. An accidental fill up of 87 will not hurt anything. But for me personally I would be a little more aware of what gas you are selecting before pumping it in your car.
Unrelated to this post. I never understand people who spend good money on a high end car and then run cheap **** on it like tires and such. Take care of your car and more times than not it will take care of you.

Really, people just need to use a little common sense. Yes an occasional 87 will not destroy the engine but keep doing it and you may just screw up the engine. All that knocking can't be good for it
I can't for the life of me understand wanting to save a couple bucks on a fill up. So dumb. Lunch these days costs $8-10 on average

"Top Tier" Gas
How many of you follow Lexus's "strong recommendation" for Top Tier Gas?
From the 3IS owners manual:
● Lexus strongly recommends the use of Top Tier Detergent Gasoline. For more information

A knock sensor is there to protect the engine not your wallet.
I have a 2007 FJ Cruiser which Toyota recommends to run 91. My friend and I both bought ours with in days of each other both still have them.
I ran 91 he ran 87. I have 30K mi more than he does.....care to guess who does not have any engine related trouble? Purrs like a kitten.

I thought the reason why premium gas is needed in high compression cars is because on lower octane, the gas has a higher change of prematurely combusting?
As for 87 octane, you will be fine, I thought gas stations generally run 2 octanes higher due to complicance issues so 87 = 89, 89 = 91, 91 = 93

guys, listen to dchar and myself...in the newer cars with fuel injection and computer control, you may notice a small performance difference between premium and regular and that's about it! I would be surprised if the mileage was affected (much). it pretty much boils down to air/fuel mixture and timing which is computer controlled. your car will advance the timing with premium (slower burning) which equates to better performance and retard with regular (faster burning). its easy to psych yourself into thinking its running crappier. YMMV.
