I was at this cross-road not long ago. Window sticker price difference between the IS350 F Sport we ultimately bought and the GS 350 F Sport I wanted was only $7500. I will agree the IS is more fun and nimble to drive; however, I liked the F Sport options better on the GS (as mentioned above).
But, in the end, the car is for my wife, and you know the saying...happy wife, happy life. Guess I'll need to get the GS for me one day. To the OP, the best I can tell you is to test drive both, both in the city and on the highway, and see which one checks off more of what you're looking for.

I am in a similar position (although I don't have kids just yet) since my 2014 IS350 F-Sport is near the end of its lease and there are some great incentives to trade it in early. I am trying to decide between a 2016 IS350 F Sport and a 2015 GS350 F-Sport, both with RWD and they have some really great incentives on the 2015 GS since it is getting a refresh for 2016. I echo other people's sentiments about the IS F-Sport - it is smaller and much sportier and I love the way it looks outside and in. There are few cars on the road that look like it and the interior reminds me of the purposeful industrial look from sci-fi movies of the 80's (Robot Jox, Total Recall, etc.) and while the trick gauges are kind of a gimmick, I kind of love them.
As for the GS, I have only driven an AWD non F-Sport model that I had as a loaner for my 10K mile service but I was pretty impressed. It was much sportier than I thought it would be and despite the fact that it is only a little bit bigger than the IS, it felt much bigger on the inside, specifically the width of the cabin.
While I am leaning more towards a new IS (they finally offer the F-Sport in blue) since I rarely have back seat passengers and love how sporty and compact it is, I am still taking a close look at the GS since I can get into a 2015 for roughly the same lease price as a 2016 IS.
