I literally just went through this about 2 hours ago. The driver side, I just reached my hand up underneath the dash, twisted the socket out, and disconnected it. I do have larger hands, but you just have to bare through it!
The passenger side, the bottom panel will actually pop down. You use a screwdriver with some painters tape on the end and pop the panel straight down. Then you can easily take the socket off the panel and replace the bulb. Took about 30 seconds once I figured that out!

Hey guys. I just installed my Philips LEDs. The install was very straightforward, everything went in without a hitch. I wrapped the tip of a flat head screwdriver with some duct tape and used that to pop out all of the covers. Thanks again for the recommendations, these LEDs look perfect, are NOT too bright and are exactly what I was looking for! As an added benefit, they dim perfectly. I've attached a few pictures to give you guys who are considering these bulbs an idea of how they look.
OEM bulbs with only 1 map light on:
same OEM map light bulb swapped with the Philips:
All bulbs replaced:
Hope these images can give you guys an idea of how it looks. I found the bulbs on amazon for about $12 per pair. The model number for the bulbs that I purchased is 127916000KB2.
Good luck to all

Looks nice Jeff, but I think it's too dark! . The Philips really are not much if any brighter than stock, just a clean, pure white light. Looks pretty nice to me =).
Your car looks like a night club, which is actually kind of awesome. Must look great with that blue

Also if you still find it harder to remove the bulb ( particularly true for the driver's side foot light in 3IS as well), you can cover the bulb with some electrical tape to increase the fiction.
FYI, there is indeed a tool which grabs such wedge bulbs properly with hassle. I came across one from a kit sold by a company called Amon from Japan. The idea is similar to the gripper to remove bigger light bulbs on high ceilings at home.
