Default Differential Fluid Service

Has anyone performed differential service on their vehicle yet? Usually 30K is considered a good interval.

Good for who? The dealership? Lexus doesn't specify ANY differential fluid change for the 3IS up through 180K miles.

I realize the owners manual doesn't specify an interval for the Differential OR Transmission fluid, but was just wondering if anyone had considered doing so.

Weird. My owner's manual says to replace rear differential fluid every 40,000 km.

I just replaced it today for the 80,000km service. Additionally I replaced the transmission fluid too.

I replaced it once at 40 and now at 80. I think it is related to our region, since our environment is different.

I would have to assume the same. I'm guessing you performed the service at a dealer?

My mechanic suggested I do this at 30k miles.

Yup, I had to pay the dealership 770 USD for this service.

This! Do you really believe everything your dealership says?

Unfortunately we do not have the option of second opinion since there is only one Toyota/Lexus dealer in the country. If I want to keep the warranty I will need to do a certain services (40k &80k) in the dealer ship, the other services I do them outside.

Does your owners manual call for these fluid changes at 40K and 80K, or are they just something that the dealer recommends you do? If the latter then not doing them should not affect your warranty.

The differential yes, but for the transmission it is not writen in the manual. Additionally I have the choice either to do it or refuse, but I do not trust other shops to do it since I could be cheap and get some one to do a lousy job or go for a good shop and pay the same as paying the dealership. BTW the service guy there is actually a good guy and he took many other things from the changes since the dealership charges too much and it is an easy job to be done by any shop.

From the US Warranty and Service Guide:

Transmission/Transfer Case
Inspect transmission/transfer case for signs of leakage. If you discover any leakage, have it repaired immediately by a qualified technician.

Note:
The transmission/transfer case and transmission fluid are a completely sealed unit. Therefore, periodic checks and replacement of the transmission fluid are not required, and there is no dipstick on the transmission. Any repairs that require adding or replacing fluid should be performed by a qualified technician following procedures in Lexus service and repair publications.

The only time we changed the differential fluid was when we we're making other repairs, i.e. axel seal, pinion seal etc.
