Dumb question.
1) Is it bad to switch between Manual and Drive mode on the freeway?
2) Is it bad to the engine to downshift to get more torque? When I'm on Drive mode at gear 8 and downshift with paddle shifter, the gear drops to 5 instead of 7.
3) How do you shift smoothly on manual? Each time I shift gears, my car jerks. I usually shift around 3-4k rpm instead of the usual 2.5k rpm that the drive mode does,

Downshifts for more torque is pretty much the reason to downshift :-)
Mine doesn't shift smoothly in manual either, so I wouldn't worry about it.
Remember, this isn't a manual Porsche, it's a computerized Lexus. They won't let you do a lot to do serious damage. If you can do it, it's probably ok.

2. It downshifts enough to get more torque. The last 2 gears are pretty much just overdrives
3. Around 4K the engine is right around its peak torque which would be why your getting a jerk going into the next gear. Nothing wrong there either.
