Default need help, dashcam install into mirror harness

I bought this 12v to 5v step down
Amazon Amazon

I stripped the wires a bit more and twisted them (using a pocket knife; i'm limited on tools, although perhaps I can ask the IT guy at work for some more if needed)

To slide down the mirror wire harness cover, I followed the directions here.

Mine is a 2016, so as noted in that thread, the wire colors are different but the left-bottom was positive and just next to it negative

I started the engine and dashcam powered on, but the wires are very loose -- and I'm also scared that the bare wires that aren't fully inserted might touch each other in future.

As soon as I try to put the cover back on, or any movement, and the wires come out

Any suggestions on how to get the wires safely inserted and not become loose?

Thanks for the suggestion. Would something like this suffice:
Solderless Flexible Breadboard Jumper Wires
Amazon Amazon

or an insulated thin copper wire from home depot?

where I tape one end of wire to the step down converter and insert the other end into the wire harness? Probably cheaper than buying the wires on mirrortap

I ended up getting a 20 gauge insulated copper wire from home depot. They are sold for 22cents/foot off a spool (a two wire strand).

It ended up doing the trick. Maybe a slightly smaller wire would've worked better though as it was a bit difficult to stick in. taped the other end to my converter wire, taped the converter to the back of the mirror.
