Default IS200t spark plugs

Looks like OEM spark plugs are NGK 91961 and about $16 a piece on RockAuto. Will any other Iridium plugs suffice or are these plugs a certain heat range or plug depth to make them this expensive?

Stick to OEM, spark plugs are not something you really want to mess with in regards to changing it up unless you’re doing some hardcore tuning that requires different spark plugs. You can use other iridium plugs probably, but I wouldn’t risk it.

Sorry...the cheapskate in me was coming out. Not sure if the 40k interval on Iridium plugs is overkill on lexus part. Typically they are 100k plugs.

Your service manual says 40k for spark plugs?

Just checked. Lexus says at 40,000 miles:
  • Replace Spark Plugs
(Required Under Terms Of Emission Control Warranty.)
Pretty surprising that they'd be required to be replaced that early. But probably due to being turbocharged, they become toast earlier and therefore less efficient, putting a strain on the electrical/ignition system. My guess anyway. If you're tuned... maybe half that.

I'd echo Flash's sentiment. Go stock. Don't want to jerk with a turbo car.

Just looked up the service manual on my IS. Sure enough it’s every 40k for spark plugs that’s so crazy haha. I’m used to at least 80k. Oh well, gotta pay to play I guess, not that the spark plugs are expensive or hard to replace anyways d:

Interesting. Must be related to the turbo as my 14 350 needs it at 60k

Yeah w turbo you are jamming a lot of air and fuel into small cylinders so immense pressure and heat. those plugs will die faster.

Did you end up replacing the plugs? Im at 40k miles and I think my plugs are toast because I was tuned for the last 3-4k miles. My car bounces off rev limiter at 5k rpm and is down on power and Im thinking it has to do with the spark plugs. I’m considering replacing with colder ones but not sure yet.

@Miintt - Might be your coil pack acting up. My cyl 2 coil pack melted down at 40k miles, I was running a JB4 tune for 3-4k miles at the time too. Had very similar symptoms to what you described!

Thanks for the input, that helps a lot! I’m thinking I’ll do spark plugs and coil packs at the same time.

Default 55K miles OEM NGK 91961

After running 55K miles with OEM plugs and sensing misfires at WOT, I wanted to show how beaten were those spark plugs the car came with. I was not getting any CEL when the misfires were happening, they were light, but until I decided to do a couple of hot passes to trigger it. Check cylinder #4 to the right, even lost the upper electrode. Thats the one that triggered the CEL.

Gap there is .054”

Gap for the 3 to the left all .034”

CEL lighted up after second hot pass.
