One of my greatest fears: Door dings :(

I always park my car far from everyone else as well but I have to park in a spot that is in a corner with only one side for a car to park next to me. I also hug the curb side as close as I possibly can to further my car from the potential door that could hit it. My lady thinks I’m nuts.
People probably think I'm crazy when they see me do it.

Today’s example of my door ding paranoia. Yes I drive a CT but I was able to relate so much so I had to join in this thread! Some other weird things I do include: Never rolling down my windows as to not allow dust in, Keeping my DRL off so that they last longer, constantly dusting the interior with a microfiber towel, Driving with my fingers in the corners of the steering wheel so my steering wheel doesn’t get that worn shiny look. I have issues, I know.

I try an park away and always come out to find someone right next to me. Always ticks me off. My wife and I went on a weekender a few years ago, and when we came out of the hotel, someone had keyed her Jeep which was on an end spot by itself. Cost $300 to buff most of it out.

From the couple vids I watched on youtube, I think its a case-by-case basis. Most likely they won't need to drill anything. A common method I saw used was pushing/lifting the small dent out from under the metal with a type of pry bar, which produces a "volcano" effect on the dented area. They then hammer out the edges of the "volcano" with a wooden pestle-type-thing as to not damage the paint. They then repeat pushing/lifting, and hammering until its evened out. Finish off with a buff.

If you want to keep your car nice, you'll have to park strategically 100% of the time. I always look for end spots and ones that have extra clearance on all sides. End spots often end up with larger areas in many cases. Sometimes I make a parking space at the end of a row. You have to be smart about parking, otherwise people will ruine your car for you over time.

I am horribly terrified of people dinging my car almost every single time i park it. Does anyone use a dash cam to protect themselves? I probably look like a retard, circling around my car several times every time I park it.

A few people on ClubLexus use dash cams (myself included), but a lot more people should!

A dash cam protecting you assumes you are able to read their plate AND confirm that they are the car that hit you. Both elements you'd need to prove any claim. Either way you're still left with a ding you have to deal with. Best to avoid it to begin with. Just careful how you park as said. Make sure you don't park next to a pile. Sometimes you can't avoid it but all you can do is try. No dings yet knock on wood.

Also another tip... if you find you HAVE to park in a tight spot... i always turn my wheel full lock and align it with the door of the other car to make sure if they do swing their door open, chances are they'll hit my tire. Usually though that works for one side so i usually angle it to the crappier car, the dirtier car, or the car that looks like a non-car person owns. A porsche 911 usually won't ding your door. a toyota sienna will though.
